What does PCOS stand for?
PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
What are the causes of PCOS?
The exact cause of PCOS is not known yet. Some doctors & experts claim that genetics have a major role in PCOS. Other reasons that are known to cause PCOS are: High levels of male hormones i.e. androgens, increased insulin levels, and chronic low-grade inflammation.
What are the symptoms of PCOS?
Symptoms that you might have PCOS include irregular or no ovulation & periods which also causes difficulty in becoming pregnant. Depression or changes in mood, oily skin & Acne, unwanted facial or body hair, thinning or loss of scalp hair, and weight related issues – overweight, rapid weight gain or difficulty in losing weight are the other symptoms that indicate that you might have PCOS.
PCOS normally affects women after they hit puberty i.e. around the age of 11 or start having their menstrual cycle.
Does PCOS affect the chances of getting pregnant?
The answer is it might. One of the factors that causes PCOS is hormonal imbalance, which generally hampers ovulation and causes female infertility or sub-fertility.
Are there cures for PCOS?
No, there is not any cure for PCOS however it can be reversed and treated. Medications that help in regulating ovulation are often prescribed by the doctors. Apart from medications, a healthy lifestyle, keeping your weight in check, help in controlling PCOS.
